Wilson Sonsini Advises Freenome on IP Matters Related to $254 Million Funding
On February 15, 2024, Freenome, a biotechnology company developing blood tests for early cancer detection, announced it has raised $254 million in new funding from new and existing investors. Proceeds from the financing will help advance Freenome’s pipeline of single-cancer and tailored multi-cancer early detection tests built on its multiomics platform. Bipartisan Legislation Seeks to Clarify Which Inventions Are Patent Eligible
The U.S. patent system is based upon a quid pro quo balance that incentivizes innovation via a time-limited patent exclusivity, while encouraging the dissemination of new ideas for public benefit and use upon expiration of the patented innovation. However, for some innovative technologies, such as personalized medicine, diagnostics, and artificial intelligence (AI), case law developed within the past decade has made obtaining patent protection increasingly difficult. This has led to a lack of clarity and incentive for some innovators to develop technologies that may not be eligible for patent protection.1

Wilson Sonsini Advises Mirvie on $60 Million Series B
On May 17, 2022, Mirvie, a pioneer in predicting unexpected pregnancy complications, announced it has raised $60 million in a Series B funding round. The financing was led by Decheng Capital with additional funding from funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, Foresite Capital, General Catalyst, GV, Khosla Ventures, and Mayfield as well as a debt facility with Comerica Bank. The round brings Mirvie’s total funding to date to $90 million. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati represented Mirvie on the Series B financing and has advised the company since its inception.

Wilson Sonsini Represents Cellino in $80 Million Series A Financing
On January 25, 2022, Cellino Biotech, an autonomous cell therapy manufacturing company, announced the completion of a Series A financing of $80 million, led by the impact investment arm of Bayer AG—Leaps by Bayer—8VC, and Humboldt Fund. New investors in the round include Felicis Ventures and others, joining existing investors The Engine and Khosla Ventures. The company has raised a total of $96 million in gross proceeds from private financings to date. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati represented Cellino in the transaction.
