Michael O’Brien is an associate in the Austin office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he advises companies of various sizes and maturity on privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection matters. Michael works closely with clients to help them address complex compliance risks and other challenges with respect to their collection, use, and other processing of data. As a transactional lawyer, he also has extensive experience advising clients on privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection matters in the context of mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, securities offerings, strategic partnerships, data licensing arrangements, vendor agreements, and other types of corporate and commercial transactions.

Prior to joining the firm, Michael served as an in-house privacy and data security counsel for an energy efficiency company, where he managed all privacy and data security-related legal matters, including with respect to commercial negotiations, acquisitions, incident response, and compliance. During law school, he was a judicial extern to the Honorable Yvonne Gonzales Rogers of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The International Association of Privacy Professionals has designated Michael as a Certified Information Privacy Professional.

On July 27, 2026, argenx, a global immunology innovation company, and Forte Biosciences, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which argenx will acquire Forte Biosciences for $77.00 per share in cash, representing a total equity value of approximately $2.2 billion. FB102, Forte Biosciences’ lead program, expands argenx’s portfolio of differentiated immunology medicines, adding a first-in-class anti-CD122 antibody with clinical proof-of-concept in vitiligo and celiac disease and potential to address multiple autoimmune diseases. On July 7, 2026, Principal Financial Group announced an agreement to acquire Beam Benefits, an employee benefits company serving more than 25,000 small businesses. Principal currently serves 180,000 employers, providing comprehensive retirement, benefits, and business owner solutions. The acquisition is expected to close in the latter half of 2026, subject to the completion of customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
