In a recent UK interview with The Lawyer, Maryam Ziarati McLoughlin, the general counsel of Wilson Sonsini client Paddle, spoke extensively about her journey from private practice to her in-house role with the leading payments infrastructure provider. She describes being drawn in by the business and its potential for "huge growth," recalling that co-founder Harrison Rose had told her, "If you don't like change, this place will give you whiplash!"
In a matter of months after Maryam joined Paddle’s team, the company raised a Series C round of fundraising—even in the midst of the pandemic. Maryam describes how she was still sole legal counsel at that point, so she brought in Silicon Valley-based Wilson Sonsini to advise on Paddle's fundraising. She says of the firm: "Its model is very different to the law firms that I am used to. The firm knows the tech industry very well and started out in the U.S. It moved into Britain later on having seen the potential in UK tech and also tapped into the fact that a lot of these tech start-ups may want to expand into the U.S."
