On August 1, 2023, Law Students for Climate Accountability (LS4CA) released its fourth annual report on the role that the legal industry plays in the climate crisis more broadly. The 2023 Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard ranks the Vault 100 law firms based on how much fossil fuels work they have engaged in over a five-year period. Among the Vault 100 firms, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati is one of only five firms to receive an “A” on the Scorecard, and of those firms, Wilson Sonsini had the highest volume of clean energy and climate-related transactional work tracked by the publication.

The Scorecard tracks litigation, transactional, and lobbying work conducted by the law firms over a five-year span. Each firm receives an overall Climate Score that reflects its contribution to the climate crisis, based on the data in these three categories. Of the Vault 100 firms, only five received an “A” Climate Score, while nine received a “B,” seven received a “C,” 36 received a “D,” and 43 received an “F.”  LS4CA, a student-led organization, publishes these rankings with the goal of empowering law students to choose professional careers aligned with personal commitments to addressing climate change.
