Wilson Sonsini Honored as 2022 Pro Bono Innovator by Bloomberg Law
On November 2, 2022, Bloomberg Law highlighted 15 legal leaders for their work successfully handling a panoply of legal issues faced across the country and the globe in its inaugural class of “Pro Bono Innovators.” Wilson Sonsini was named among the honorees for its work on behalf of one of the largest classes of Medicare beneficiaries in history to ensure their right to appeal adverse classifications that affect their right to Medicare coverage for critical care and its pursuit of justice on behalf of Colombians affected by the deadly violence of a paramilitary leader, in addition to its involvement in other matters.
Bloomberg Law's inaugural Pro Bono Innovators special report highlights a selection of legal leaders that embody that philosophy in their pro bono work for the underserved. The publication’s team of editors closely evaluated the nominations in multiple categories, including innovative approaches to pro bono client service, pro bono success history of the nominee, and the breadth and impact of their matters. Fourteen law firms and one nonprofit organization were selected as the inaugural honorees for their work on various issues faced worldwide.
In the accompanying profile, Wilson Sonsini Pro Bono Partner Luke Liss dives into the strategy and approach around taking on pro bono matters, including representing Medicare beneficiaries in Alexander v. Azar alongside the Center for Medicare Advocacy and Justice in Aging, and working with the Center for Justice & Accountability on a Torture Victim Protection Act case. He discusses the most innovative aspects of the matters and the impact they have had on a local, national, and global scale. For example, in Alexander, the victory protects the right of hundreds of thousands of elderly or disabled Medicare patients to receive Medicare coverage for care they often desperately need. In all of the pro bono matters, Luke attributes the successful results to the attorney teams and the longstanding support of pro bono from Wilson Sonsini's leadership.
