Wilson Sonsini Secures Complete Jury Trial Victory for Via Transportation
On January 30, 2025, firm client and microtransit leader Via won a complete victory against its competitor, RideCo, following a seven-day jury trial and years of litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.  After less than 3 hours of deliberation, the jury found that RideCo infringed three of Via’s patents on its virtual bus stop technology (U.S. Patent Nos. 9,562,785, 9,816,824, and 10,197,411) and ordered RideCo to pay damages, with total pretrial and ongoing damages to be determined. Via also prevailed against RideCo’s counterclaims, with the jury finding that Via did not infringe either of RideCo’s two asserted patents.

Firm Secures Judgment for TikTok and ByteDance in Data Privacy Class Action
On December 24, 2024, Judge Stanley Blumenfeld of the Central District of California granted summary judgment in favor of Wilson Sonsini's clients, TikTok Inc. and ByteDance Inc. The lawsuit, originally filed in May 2023, concerned allegations of illegal data collection by online advertisers using the Pixel, a web tool advertisers can install on web pages to collect certain browsing information. Such data, when matched to TikTok users, can be used to improve ad performance. The plaintiffs, three individuals who had never had TikTok accounts, claimed that TikTok violated their privacy, intercepted and eavesdropped on their communications with websites under the California Invasion of Privacy Act and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and stole their property.

On February 28, 2024, Judge John Koeltl of the federal district court in Manhattan dismissed an attempt to challenge the Art Institute of Chicago’s legal ownership of an Egon Schiele drawing, “Russian War Prisoner.” In the latest memorandum, Koeltl upheld his prior decision to dismiss the case brought by the heirs of a Fritz Grünbaum, who alleged that the drawing was stolen from the Austrian Jewish performer by Nazis during World War II.
