Innovation & Incubation in Silicon Valley
Chairs: Casey McGlynn, Dr. Fumi Ikeno
Given all of the hurdles entrepreneurs face today, from early-stage financing to regulatory approval and reimbursement, launching new companies has never been more difficult. Yet great ideas abound. In the U.S. ,over the past decade or so, a new model for company creation and device innovation has emerged—the medical device incubator—to both streamline and increase the efficiency of the innovation process. In this session, representatives from some of the U.S.’s leading device incubators discuss the various challenges incubators face, from needs-finding and idea creation to prototyping and market sizing. They’ll also look at the stumbling blocks and obstacles that new companies face early on in the process of device development and will explore alternative approaches that start-ups are experimenting with as they give birth to the next generation of medtech businesses.

Creating a Global Medical Device Ecosystem
Koji Nakao, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Japan Federation of Medical Devices Association
The experience of U.S. incubators and innovators suggests that the process of successfully taking an idea from concept to first in humans to commercialization involves much trial and error and an ability to adapt and change direction, all within a multi-disciplinary collaboration driven by small teams of highly motivated, experienced entrepreneurs. Also critical to the ecosystem: a rich supply of resources, including academic centers, engineering and manufacturing expertise, close relationships with physicians and hospitals, and, finally, collaboration with large medtech companies that can bring new devices to market. In this session, Koji Nakao, chairman of the board of JFMDA and Terumo Corp., offers his perspective on the critical components of a thriving ecosystem and what Japan needs to build on its own.
