On March 1, 2018, InterDigital, a mobile technology research and development company, announced that it has made a binding offer to purchase the patent licensing business of Technicolor, a worldwide technology leader in the media and entertainment sector, for $150 million in cash plus future contingent consideration.
As part of the transaction, InterDigital will acquire Technicolor's portfolio of more than 21,000 patents and applications across a broad range of technologies, as well as a licensing team with deep experience in consumer electronics and other technology markets. The agreement also includes a research collaboration that leverages the efforts of hundreds of engineers worldwide. The combination of InterDigital's and Technicolor's licensing businesses in the increasingly complementary areas of mobile technology and video technology will create a world-leading R&D-based licensing enterprise.
The deal is expected to close in mid-2018, subject to certain closing conditions.
