Vern Norviel and Olivia Kim Honored Among Daily Journal's "Top Intellectual Property Lawyers" in California

On August 16, 2017, the Daily Journal named Vern Norviel and Olivia Kim to its 2017 list of the "Top Intellectual Property Lawyers" in California. The publication created the annual list of the state’s leading patent, trademark, and copyright lawyers after reviewing nominations from members of the legal community and its own editors and reporters.

Vern was recognized for his "three decades' experience formulating successful strategies for life science companies and developing their intellectual property programs." Among his many successes, Vern was noted for his work as lead patent counsel for Delinia, a privately held biotechnology company developing novel therapeutics for autoimmune diseases, in its $775 million agreement to be acquired by pharmaceutical heavyweight Celgene Corp. in January 2017.

Olivia was honored for her "coast-to-coast IP practice that regularly brings her to some of the country’s busiest IP-oriented districts, including the Northern District of California, the Eastern District of Texas, and the District of Delaware." Specifically, Olivia was recognized for her work obtaining a summary judgment of noninfringement on behalf of Bloomberg and Charles Schwab in a case brought by Quest Licensing before Judge Gregory M. Sleet of the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, who reportedly has only allowed five summary judgment motions to be filed over the past 15 years, and has granted none of them on the issue of infringement.
