EXPERIENCE:

Sean Butler is an associate in the Seattle office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. He practices corporate and securities law primarily for venture-backed technology companies, with an emphasis on the growing clean tech and alternative energy industries. In his practice Sean provides a variety of services to his clients, including guidance during the initial start-up phase, with an eye to securing early working capital, general corporate advice on day-to-day administration, and strategic counsel through major transactions such as venture financings, mergers and acquisitions, and public offerings.

Currently Sean is also part of the Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati team bringing the Clean Tech Open to the Pacific Northwest. The Clean Tech Open is the nation's premier business competition devoted to clean and renewable technology ventures. In 2009 finalists from several regional competitions will compete for a national prize in San Francisco.

Sean joined the firm's Palo Alto office in 2005 after graduating from UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law and moved to the Seattle office in 2007.

While in law school, he served as a research assistant for Professor Pamela Samuelson, focusing on the historical underpinnings of the concept of functionality as it appears at the intersections of copyright, patent, and trademark law. In addition, he spent a year as a student intern in the Law, Technology, and Public Policy Clinic, where he helped support the copyright-law clearinghouse, www.chillingeffects.org, and co-authored a brief discussing the public interest in open source software.
